Digambara

Author of the Gommatasara; guru of Chamundaraya

Guru of Chamundaraya, who built the Bahubali of Shravanabelagola.

The story

Nemichandra earned the title Siddhanta Chakravarti — emperor of doctrine — for his mastery of the Jain canon. He was the guru of Chamundaraya, the Ganga general and minister who commissioned the great statue of Bahubali at Shravanabelagola, completed around 981 CE.

For his disciple he condensed the vast Dhavala scriptures into the Gommatasara — named after Chamundaraya's pet name, Gommata, which is also how Bahubali's statue came to be called Gommateshwara. He also wrote the Trilokasara on Jain cosmology and the Dravyasangraha, a short introduction to the six substances still memorised by students. Chamundaraya, for his part, wrote the Chavundaraya Purana, one of the earliest prose works in Kannada.
