Acharya Tulsi

Ninth acharya of the Terapanth order

Who offered small vows to everyone, whatever their faith — the Anuvrat movement.

The story

Tulsi became the ninth acharya of the Svetambara Terapanth order at the age of twenty-two, and led it for nearly six decades. In 1949, soon after India's independence, he launched the Anuvrat movement: small, practical vows — against dishonesty, addiction, violence and waste — offered to everyone regardless of religion or caste. It carried Jain ethics into public life across the country.

He founded Jain Vishva Bharati at Ladnun as a centre of learning, encouraged the education of nuns, and in a rare step handed on the leadership of the order in his own lifetime to his disciple Acharya Mahapragya, the scholar and teacher of Preksha meditation.
