The story

One of two Tirthankaras with a red complexion. During the pregnancy the queen longed to lie on a bed of red lotuses, and the child was born with the colour and glow of one. His images are carved or painted red where the material allows — one of the few cases where the traditional colour of a Tirthankara is actually seen in temples.

Kaushambi, his birthplace, is a real, excavated ancient city on the Yamuna near Prayagraj. The geography of the twenty-four is consistently that of the Gangetic plain and its old kingdoms.
