Named from his mother's dream of an endless string of jewels — ananta, without end.
The name carries doctrinal weight. A liberated soul in Jainism is defined by four infinities — infinite knowledge, perception, bliss and energy (ananta-chatushtaya). A Tirthankara named Ananta is a living statement of the goal.
His emblem is another point where the traditions differ, and a visible one: a falcon in Svetambara images, a porcupine in Digambara images. When identifying a Jain sculpture, checking the emblem against the tradition is the first step.
